Commissioner Larry E. Lunnen
Governor Scott M. Matheson appointed Larry E. Lunnen Commissioner of Public Safety effective January 1, 1977. Lunnen’s career in law enforcement started in the United States Army as a paratrooper and also in the military police. He also served with the Salt Lake City Police Department for five years, U. S. Treasury Department for one year, as Orem Police Chief for four years, and in the Department of Public Safety within the Highway Safety Division. He also administered the Alcohol Safety Action Program, directed Law Enforcement Planning and Special Programs, and served as Director of the Bureau of Criminal Identification. In addition to these assignments, Commissioner Lunnen taught law enforcement related classes for Weber State College. He served as Commissioner until 1985. Lunnen was later appointed Chief of Police for Sandy City. He is currently teaching at Dixie College and Southern Utah State University.
