Executive Protection

Approximately one hour after the inauguration of Governor Calvin L. Rampton in 1965, the Governor called Colonel Lyle Hyatt and asked for a driver. Staff Sergeant Mike Gale was sent and for the next few days he drove the Governor to his appointments, including the Inaugural Ball. The position became permanent and was the beginning of the Executive Protection branch of the Utah Highway Patrol. Later Governor Rampton told Colonel Hyatt to promote Mike to Lieutenant. Mike was promoted on October 1, 1965. Today, the Department of Public Safety continues to provide protection for the Governor.
