Move Over – A Life-Saving Law

It’s a life-saving law, but most people don’t know about it.

Although all 50 states have enacted “Move Over” laws, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that 71% of Americans are unaware of these laws.

To protect first responders and others who work on our roadways, NHTSA, the Utah Department of Public Safety, the Utah Highway Patrol, the Utah Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration and the Utah Professional Towing Alliance partnered to educate motorists about Utah’s “Move Over” law.

Utah’s Law

Utah’s Move Over Law is contained in Utah Code 41-6a-904

Drivers approaching stationary emergency vehicles, highway maintenance vehicles or towing vehicles displaying flashing red, red & white, red and blue lights or amber lights need to slow down, provide as much space as practical to the stationary vehicles, and, if move over a lane if it’s safe and clear.

This law requires drivers to move over and/or slow down when approaching stopped emergency or maintenance vehicles.

The consequences of breaking this simple law can be disastrous and deadly.
